Freedom of expression

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.-Nelson Mandela

How do you define freedom of expression?
How do we measure the quatum of “hurt” or “offence” against any other person?
Do we also require Censor board for newspapers and books?

My questions are when Perumal Murugan, a Tamil Nadu-based writer, has decided not to write anymore, and has withdrawn all his books. His decision comes on the back of raging protests against his latest book, 'Madhorubagan', by Hindu and caste-based outfits.

How does one define “hurt” to a particular religion, society, caste, creed?
How do we define the boundaries of freedom of expression?

They say that while having freedom of expression the writer has a responsibility, not to hurt anyone ?
Each writer and author has a different boundaries of freedom of expression…so how do we measure ‘responsibility’?

Do we recall the book or ban it if it is offensive to certain people?
Sometimes I can understand if a film is offensive to me I may not watch it, ditto with a book...

If the intent of the writer is blasphemy or riots or to offend, the writer should be put behind bars.
